Stephen Porter MD, MPH
Instructor of Pediatrics, Assistant in Medicine (Emergency Medicine)

RESEARCH
Dr. Porter has focused on the value of patients' report of medical histories and has carefully investigated the validity of parents' direct electronic report of historical data elements. He has incorporated training previously acquired in epidemiology and biostatistics with his skills in interface development to create and test computer-based reporting mechanisms for parents. His work has been published in both the emergency medicine and informatics literature. With the advent of the electronic medical record (EMR) and the use of centralized electronic databases for storage, retrieval, and analysis of patient-related information, the potential for non-clinicians to participate more fully in the sharing and interpreting of historical information is real. Dr. Porter seeks to maximize the influence and participation of patients in their own medical care through the creation of mechanisms for the direct report of medical data to both the physician at the time of acute care as well as to the medical record itself.
